The Varying Intensity of Conflict

Do you know the difference between a conflict that can be settled over a beer or a coffee and those which require more focused support?? The intensity of a conflict can vary and so should your strategy for managing or resolving it.

Generally will fall into one of 5 categories (from least to most intense):

1. Differences

Happens when two or more people have different views on a situation, but they understand each other's stance. No ongoing discomfort ensues.

2. Misunderstandings

Happens when two or more people have differing understandings of a situation. Can be minor but can also escalate in high pressure situations. Can manifest as a missed obligation or failure to deliver on a promise.

3. Disagreements

Happens when two or more people see a situation differently, BUT even though they understand the other's stance, they are still uncomfortable with the differing viewpoints. Ignoring a disagreement can lead to escalation.

4. Discord

Happens when conflict results in an ongoing relationship issue between those involved, even after the conflict itself has been managed.

5. Polarization

Happens in situation where there are intense negative feelings and intense negative behaviour. This level of intensity can make the conflict extremely difficult (although not impossible) to resolve.

The Takeaway

Trying to manage or resolve a conflict without appreciating its level of intensity may actually end up escalating the situation. In order to strategize a way through the conflict one of the things we need to understand is its effect on the people involved.
